Defining Calories

My inspiration for this card comes from 2 sources: Deconstructed Sketch #200 and my determination to walk 10,000 steps per day. I started at accomplishing my goal 3 times per week and gradually over the last 6 weeks have increased to daily as of this week. I promised my youngest daughter I would give this 6 months to see what happened after she took 6 months running uphill from her school to my school after school was out and she was impressed that she attained many physical milestones despite being athletic to start with and I'm not, so I should see a lot of improvement.

I really love the combination of floral and polka dot pattern paper in this card. Typically I'm intimidated by the 'wow factor' of polka dots, but I think I used it to advantage here. They make a pretty background for the floral and bunting.

I built a great deal of depth into this card, and I'm not sure it was the right direction to go with it, except that the flat version left me feeling flat. The darkest bunting was made using a coredin'ations scrap I had laying on my desk, and I don't know where it came from. I sanded it to expose the embossing and I really love the effect.

Splitcoast Challenge Randomness

Occasionally, I have a deep need to sit down and create. Last Wednesday night was just such a time. Never mind I was online for one my courses at the same time. Never mind that it was a tough session due to technical difficulties (my prof had to evacuate her building because the fire alarm went off, among other things). Never mind that I sometimes feel like I'm 40-something going on 10 and I would do well having a fidget toy to keep my hands busy. I knit on the scarce occasions I watch tv - grown up fidget toy. If I could knit and read at the same time, I feel like I could conquer the world. Or cut out sewing projects while I read. I have a lot of reading I have to do and I think I forget that reading is my priority right now and I need to shelve the fantasies of combining my activities. I can't ask anyone in my house to read to me because I lose my train of thought when they stumble over the jargon that is my life.

And so last Wednesday while I was supposed to be focused on my computer screen, while the fire drill was in full swing, I hopped over to Splitcoast to see what the sketch challenge for the week was. I love it! I rarely check these things because I am needing less inspiration than more these days.

While I had to stay beside my computer, ready to go as soon as my prof was able to get back online, I put my time to good use!! I knew I didn't have an abundance of time, so it just wouldn't do to start a colouring project because that would take too long. Maybe if I used a sentiment as the focal point?... I scanned through several small paper pads sitting on my desk to choose some patterned paper. Then, I was struck by a fabulous idea.

I used the long classic rectangle to fussy cut (quilting term) this paper!!! Brilliant, yes? Instant image! And cute to boot.

Since I used plain white paper for the background, I ran it through my Big Shot with my Roman Romance embossing folder. I cut it into 3 to replicate the SCS sketch diagram (SC496), and voila!! Cute card in no time flat! Next time, I would use string and tie a fancy knot to make the card more unisex, but I was on a time crunch and allowed habit to guide me. Bad rut!! Must keep creating outside the box!!

Believe

I'm posting for 2 days straight for the first time in a very long time. Yay, me!!

Today, I decided to use the sketch challenge from splitcoaststampers.com. My papers are from a stunning pad by Teresa Collins, Fabrications. The ribbons I've used are a great colour grouping that goes really well with this paper; olive green grosgrain edge, ivory crochet trim and two tone ivory satin ribbon, all from May Arts. As always, my bow was made with the help of my Bow Easy tool.

I've used a stamp I've had for awhile, but haven't had time to use. I really adore this darling bunny image from Lily of the Valley called, Spring Swing. I've stamped this image on 140lb cold press watercolour paper using Tuxedo Black Memento ink. Then, I let this image sit and dry really well. Really, really well. Because I used Distress Ink Markers to colour this image, I didn't want the black ink to bleed into my watercolouring. I let it sit for a couple of days because I just didn't have time to colour until today but normally I heat set the ink before I use water on it. I love the result!! Also, a little tip for Distress Ink Markers: store them horizontally. I went to use a brush end of one of the markers and it was nearly dry. This was totally my bad because I know better, but I've become accustomed to my copic markers which can be stored any old way I want! The lid of the Distress Ink Markers container has edges so it won't roll around when it is on its side.

I love this sentiment. 'Nuff said!

IHP Spring Botanical

Thanks for popping in to visit me today! I sincerely love it when you do, especially since I've been MIA so much for the last several months.

Today, I made this elegant wasp card. I don't normally thing of wasps as elegant, but this gorgeous image from my Spring Botanical set defies common waspish nastiness!

I coloured this image using the following distress markers; wild honey, rusty hinge, walnut stain, pumice stone, and white picket fence across the eyes for a little highlight. First, I stamped  the lovely shaped background on walnut creme cardstock using Pumice Stone distress ink. I cut the image by hand and sponged the edges with Pumice Stone. Then, I stamped the wasp slightly off center using rich cocoa memento ink on top of the pumice stone background.

I then stamped the wasp twice more on watercolour paper using rich cocoa memento ink. I coloured these images using distress markers and blended the colours using my handy dandy aquapainter, but it's almost as easy to use a little water colour brush and a bit of water. I cut the images and mounted them on the walnut creme base and added a little sparkle to the wings with stardust stickles. I wish all wasps looked this lovely!! I'm sure they do and I'm just too busy swatting at them to notice!

After I assembled all the parts, I stamped the sentiment from the Spring Botanical set in the corner using black soot distress ink. I sponged the edges of all the Carefree pattern paper - the darker papers were sponged using gathered twigs and the lighter using pumice stone.

I layered my watermelon crochet trim with ivory satin ribbon because I love the depth, and this coral colour is one of my all time favourite colours.

I lined up these lovely blooms just because I like them...

A Little Something

For this card, I used last week's sketch challenge on Splitcoaststampers. I'll be using this sketch again - I love it!This lovely paper is from Fabrications Linen by Teresa Collins which is such a lovely, elegant pad of papers!

I just got the Distress Markers from Tim Holtz, launched at winter CHA. They are divine! I've used them on kraft paper which isn't easy because this paper absorbs the ink very quickly. On this poppy image from Spring Botanical by Gourmet Rubber Stamps, I coloured using fired brick and barn door for the blossom. Then, I used picket fence to add a few highlights. WELL! The ink from the marker went on clear and then it looked like it bleached the paper and the red inks I had already coloured with. VERY INTERESTING!!! I think this marker has some very cool potential and I'll mess around with it some more in the near future.

I have another Gourmet Rubber Stamps stamp that I used for this card - Hot Water. I think it's a wonderful sentiment and I think about it almost every time I'm in a difficult or challenging situation. The background for this portion was stamped with a stamp from Spring Botanical stamped with Pumice Stone ink, one of my favourite neutral inks.

Love Ya!

I haven't coloured in almost a month and I was starting to suffer a little withdrawal, so I set aside the books to do something a little more creative today.

I took my main inspiration from this week's Deconstructed Sketch and the colour challenge from Splitcoast. The rest of my challenge inspiration is listed at the end of this post. There is a long list of inspiration which I'm thankful for, since my creativity needed a little jump start after being abandoned by the side of the road for the last month.

I have had this 'Love Ya' image by Mo Manning printed since last June. It has been sitting in my printed and stamped image file along with some images that were printed more than a year ago. Time sure can get away from me when I'm not looking!!! I used Stardust stickles on the background and I do love that darling, magical sparkle.

I have seen paper buttons on various cards, and it was a technique challenge on SCS awhile ago, and I'm thrilled I had a chance to give it a try today! I die cut 6 identical hearts using the Hearts Nestabilities die from Spellbinders and glued them together. I punched 2 holes with my crop-a-dile and gave it a good coating of Glossy Accents by Ranger. Note to self, grab a little patience and wait until the glossy accents is completely dry before touching;

That is such a clear fingerprint that it could be used by the police for identification purposes!!! I tied a bit of Brown Sugar Divine Twine and stuck a little floral embellishment on it.

I saw this sentiment and promptly typed it out and enlarged it for this image. It pixellated when I printed it, making it look a little fuzzy, because I am really not a digital designer. Looks pretty good in the photo though. And it is so perfect with this image.

IHP - Hot Concoctions

The blur I fondly call Christmas is over. We have lost a total of 3 pups from our current fostered litter which deeply saddens my family. Last night I had to make another emergency dash to the vet with yet another pup from this litter. This pup had a lump on the underside of her throat the size of a large gumball and all I could think was not another one! It turned out she had an abscessed infection without any sign of how it started. There are no puncture wounds or other obvious signs of trauma which might typically lead to an infection of this magnitude in a 4 week old puppy. The lump was lanced and drained and we are applying hot compresses to aid the drainage.

And card making went by the wayside this month due to life hitting us with a tonne of bricks. Today, I stole some time between compresses to finish this lovely thing I started 2 days ago for the sketch challenge on SCS.

I really love my Generations paper pad from Simple Stories! The paper designs are so rich and warm.

This fabulous coffee to go cup and sentiment are from Hot Concoctions by Paper Smooches. I had a coffee stamp set that I loved but it had only one huge cup in it and so when Kate started carrying this stamp set, it easily became my new favourite coffee set and I really love the adorable images and versatility of it!

My new favourite embellishment is a bow cluster and while this one isn't my all time favourite, it works well with this card. I keep thinking it needs a little pink rhinestone in the flower to coordinate better with the rest of the bling, and it may still get one before this card is given! I am in love with the burgundy ribbon and I need more because I don't think I have enough left to do a bow but I might just have enough to do a lovely knot, we'll see.

This image printed directly on the paper is divinely vintage!! I nearly swoon over it, and I'm thrilled that it is already beautifully coloured for me. This card was easy peasy to create because most of the work was already done for me.

Well, I completely forgot to upload this card last week in the midst of all the hubb bubb in my house; 

I love the rich vintage feel of the Riddersholm Design paper!!

And I really love the instant vintage images that coordinate with these papers!!

To keep with the vintage look, I cut white snowflakes out and sponged them with Tea Dye distress ink. Once the ink was dry, I covered the snowflakes with adhesive and dipped them in vintage glass glitter. This snowflake sparkles like it is covered in diamonds. I do love me that glass glitter!!!

BLD Puddle Jumper Winter Landon

On today's docket, Puddle Jumper Winter Landon. This digi image comes with a darling teddy bear that I will be using next month all on its own!!

With Christmas just around the corner (*eeeeeeppp!!!!*) I'm in full on Christmas card making mode, like most of you. I love digi images because I receive them in less than 24hours and I can size them to fit my needs. Wonderful stuff!!!

I'm almost through a bottle of Stardust Stickles since I'm using it on almost everything frosty and wintery.

Really, if it's related to winter, it gets a coating of stickles...

Another card of many challenges...

I've been running around for 2 weeks now. It's a really long story and the bottom line is I'm going back to University to upgrade my teaching certification. I've been substitute teaching for 2 years and I need more hours so rather than waiting by the phone (figuratively speaking), I'm taking charge. I know this has all been prepared ahead for me because when I started pursuing this new direction, everything has fallen into place quite easily in a very short time and I've not had any push back from any administration I've dealt with. I'm intimidated about returning to post secondary education after 16 years, especially since I've been told I need to take graduate courses and by the time I'm done my teaching practicum, I'll be 1/4 of the way through a Master's degree. My pre-menopausal brain may just fall out my left ear!!! The final pieces on my new path will be in place in the next couple of weeks since I can't register for my classes as an Open Studies student until December 9th. Yoish!

And since all of this new stuff is running around inside my head, I couldn't fall back asleep very early this morning. Instead, I took a peek at a bunch of challenges and they all inspired this card;

It didn't turn out quite the way I wanted, but it's close. I'm trying to reassure myself that the mojo has NOT left the building, but I am quite distracted right now...

By Lori Tuesday - I'm 1!

Lori has many darling new images available this month. For today, I've used 'I'm One! - Boy'.

I've used the Midnight Madness sketch for my layout featuring this sweet little boy image. I tried to use the 'more' layout, but I think I ended up with 'less' which works well because I find the number pattern paper from Joy Ride is quite busy. I just had to use that paper though because it is so PERFECT for this image!!!

To frame this little guy, I doodled around the edge of the circle cut using the slightly embossed edge as my guide. I coloured this image using the following copic markers;

Butterfly Mojo

When I can, I like to play along with the Mojo Monday sketch challenge. Today is my lucky day using mojo monday sketch 208!!

I love the pairing of this sentiment from 'Soar' by tlc Creations with the many layers of butterflies. I have such a wonderful weakness for butterflies and I love it - don't even think about rescuing me!

This is a wonderful sentiment and on the tlc Creations website, there are many gorgeous text as graphic sentiments that Paulette aptly calls 'Word Art'. They are definitely words and most definitely works of art. You'll see me using a lot of her sentiments from now on and I'm so happy I found her digital images!!!

The largest and mid-sized butterfly layers were cut using Spellbinders Dies from the Fanciful Flight Set. The smaller butterflies were all made using the Butterfly Trio punch by Martha Stewart. I stamped the butterfly base using Dream Text by Stampendous since the collage look of this stamp mirrors the sketch layout.

BLDC16 - By Lori Designs Sketch Challenge

I have had a frantic activity kind of a week. Yes, I did not have a Heartfelt Creations post yesterday as I usually do because I've been substitute teaching and needing to do a lot of clothing alterations for people and our latest litter of puppies is one of our friendliest litters to date and are in need of quite a bit of attention. I have to leave to sub again today shortly, so I've got to speed things up here.

Here's the deal with my card. I originally made the base 4 1/4"x 5 1/2" and had my image coloured and ready to go and made the lacey under layer for the image. These items were laying separately on my stamping desk. When I tried to put them together I discovered that the base was too small for everything else. I released a primordial groan of epic proportions and proceeded to prep a 6" square base for my 4 1/4"x 5 1/2" base. OY! I hope it doesn't look too weird.

I got the idea for the lacey border from a recent post on Becca Feeken's blog, Amazing Paper Grace. Becca has included a link for a video tutorial to create this kind of dimensional honeycomb gorgeousness.

I know it might be hard to see, but I went over Harper's skirt using an Atyou Spica glitter pen in Blossom. Up close her skirt is super sparkly from the ground glass in the pen, but I have a really hard time photographing it. If you click on this image to supersize it and bring it up in a new window, it makes the ultra fine glitter easier to see. While I was uploading this shot to blogger it went mega supersize and the sparkle was EASY to see!

IHP - Under My Umbrella

I saw the Inspiration Challenge on Splitcoaststampers today and decided to check out the Wild Wings website for a little inspiration. I found this Spring Garden painting and it reminded me of the Under My Umbrella Stampavie stamp I just got from Kate at i {heart} papers.

I used my Hattie by Stella and Rose paper pad for the colour palette. It makes me think of spring rain showers and spring skies washed clean of winter since there is little nastier than dirty snow in spring and seeing the crud that has built up over winter. *blech* Spring is the snowiest time of year for my area, and I'm normally ready for it, but we had a lot of snow this past winter and the temperature was cold for most of the winter months so having more snow right now is firmly standing on my very last raw nerve! 

I used the new Parisian Accents border die which I really love! I love the whole set, and you'll see plenty more of it in the near future. My layout is from this week's mojo monday sketch challenge. 

These Petaloo flowers got a little spring shower sprtiz of sea glass glimmer mist. I'm new to glimmer mist (*gasp* - I know!! What cave have I been habitating?!!) before adhering them and I do like the subtle sparkle they have. I started colouring this sweet girlie while I was away from home and I just had my prisma color pencils with me. I like the grainy texture it gives the umbrella and the girl's pants. The rest of the image was coloured with copic markers.
