The puppies are here!!

We got a beautiful little mama dog delivered to us last Saturday by our rescue organization. She is the most timid dog we have had to date and I didn't get a picture of her before she had her puppies because she was giving us clear signals that she wanted to be left alone. She wouldn't look at us, she often turned her back toward us when we entered the pen, and she would walk to the furthest corner away from us. *sigh* She'll warm up before long though, I'm sure of it.

We have named her Andromeda (Romy for short) and she is darling. She is the smallest mom we have had to date, and her hair is so soft and I love the colour!

This morning, I was sure she would birth today because I could smell amniotic fluid. I couldn't see contractions, but my gut said today was the big day. I had a big comfy blanket in the half kennel, so I pulled that out and got a towel in instead. It's black - I was obviously thinking minimize the blood stain factor and the puppy getting lost in the blankie factor not, 'gee, if the puppies are black and there's a black background, that might not work so well for the first family photo...'

See the little brown puppy in the midst of the black ones? I suspect the little brown guys will lighten up and look more like their mom.

I went to pick up my daughter from school and run one errand with her. Romy was fine before we left, and I still didn't see any contractions. When we got out of the car after arriving back home, I heard a little peep. A puppy had been born just minutes earlier. Within an hour, mama birthed 4 more puppies. There were 3 black and 2 brown beauties. I went and made supper and then checked back in to make sure everything was okay, and there was another black puppy - 4 black and 2 brown. Romy looked exhausted and her belly looked quite deflated, poor diddums, so we got the camera and snapped a few quick photos for the blog.

We ate supper and I started this blog post and so DH went down to make sure everything was still okay downstairs. I didn't realize I hadn't told him we had a six head count, so he came to me surprised that there were 3 black and 3 brown... Hold the phone!!!! There hadn't been 3 brown on my last head count!!! We went down to take another quick peek and sure enough, there are 4 black and 3 brown babies in there!

I thought Romy might have 4 puppies tops because I could only feel 4 anytime I did an external belly palpitation. I got the day right, but beyond that, I know nothing under the sun!!! 7 little darling peeps! For all I know, there might be one more rogue still hidden away in the warm depths there, not ready to come out yet. We'll see come morning.

I just love these little cabbage rolls! It looks like Romy is hugging this one. I have no idea which are boys or girls and what order they arrived in.

I just missed getting a picture of a huge, full on, body yawn. This one kept climbing higher and higher, yawned and then suddenly slipped down and away to feed. I'll post more pictures as they grow into their personalities and start looking more like playful, pudgy, puppies.

I'm back tomorrow with my finished February calendar and OCC is coming on Saturday.

Congratulations. How amazing - you sure know a lot more about dogs and birthing than I do. What a gift you and your family have. I noticed, after I read today's post, the AARCS button that you have. Where are you???? Alberta, Canada??? I'm in Fort Saskatchewan, just outside of Edmonton.....if you're close we're both with Sugar Creek Hollow right now. Too Cool!

Those puppies are beautiful and so precious! Hope Romy is strong enough to care for them, but if she isn't, I'm sure you and your clan will do all you can to help her.
